The safety question is the most common first question about Romania. The answer is simple but rarely given simply: yes, Romania is safe, and measurably safer than most of the Western European countries where the question is never asked. This article gives you the evidence, the nuance, and the practical advice.

The Numbers: What the Data Says
Romania consistently ranks among Europe's safer countries for tourists by the most commonly used measures. The homicide rate is lower than the UK average. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare. The country scores well on the Global Peace Index relative to its regional neighbours.
We have operated guided tours in Romania for 20 years. In that time we have not had a single serious safety incident involving any of our travellers. That is not a marketing claim — it is simply the record.

What Petty Crime Actually Looks Like
Petty crime — pickpocketing, bag snatching — exists in Bucharest's busy tourist areas and public transport, as it does in London, Paris and Rome. The same precautions that apply in any European city apply here: watch your bag on the metro, keep valuables out of back pockets in crowded areas, do not leave a laptop on a cafe table and walk away.
In rural Romania — the mountains, villages, small towns — these concerns are essentially irrelevant. Village doors are unlocked. Car doors are left open. People wave at strangers walking through their property.

Scams: What Exists and What Does Not
Taxi overcharging has historically been an issue at Bucharest airport — the solution is to use the Bolt app (works identically to Uber) or the official taxi queue inside arrivals. On our tours you are never in a situation where this is relevant, as you are met and transported from arrival.
Fake police — a scam where people posing as plainclothes officers ask to check your wallet — has been reported in Bucharest. Legitimate police will always show identification and will never ask to handle your wallet or cards. This scam is rare and declining.

Dogs: The One Genuinely Different Risk
Stray dogs exist in some Romanian cities and rural areas. The population has declined significantly following government programmes, but encounters are possible. In our 20 years of operation, our travellers have had almost no dog incidents, but it is worth knowing the basic rule: do not approach stray dogs, and walk confidently without running if you encounter an aggressive one.
Your guide is experienced with this and it will not be a feature of your trip. In mountain villages the dogs are working farm dogs — generally wary of strangers but not aggressive.

Practical Safety Summary
Cities: Same precautions as any European capital. Bucharest is no more dangerous than Budapest or Warsaw.
Villages and countryside: Extremely safe. One of the most genuinely safe rural environments in Europe.
Roads: Romanian driving can be fast and opportunistic — this is relevant if you are driving yourself. As a passenger in our vehicles, you have professional licensed drivers who know these roads.
Our recommendation: Do not let the safety question be the reason you do not visit Romania. Visit, and the question will strike you as completely unnecessary. Start with our 3-night tours from £395 or ask us about any concern directly.
