Europe's finest undiscovered hiking country. Almost no other walkers.

The Fagaras ridge has been compared to the best Alpine routes in Europe. The comparison is apt, but it misses the most important point: on the Fagaras in June, you will encounter perhaps a dozen other hikers. On a comparable route in the Alps, you will encounter thousands. That ratio — extraordinary scenery, minimal crowds — is what makes Carpathian hiking unlike anywhere else.

The Fagaras Ridge: Romania's Greatest Hike

The main Fagaras ridge runs for approximately 70 kilometres above 2,000 metres. Moldoveanu at 2,544m is the highest point in Romania. The full traverse takes 5–7 days, staying in mountain refuges (cabane) at intervals of 3–4 hours walking.

Even a partial traverse — two or three days on the main ridge — is one of Europe's finest hiking experiences. Glacial lakes, views across the Wallachian plain to the south and the Transylvanian plateau to the north. Ancient beech forest on the approach. Level 3–4. Best season: mid-June to September.

Piatra Craiului: The Limestone Ridge

Piatra Craiului (“The King’s Stone”) is 22 kilometres of white limestone pinnacles rising sharply above the Transylvanian plain. The main ridge traverse is Level 3–4 — narrow in places, exposed, requiring some scrambling. The lower approach routes are accessible at Level 2.

The views from the crest on a clear day extend across the entire Fagaras range. The wildlife is excellent — chamois, ravens and golden eagles are regular. The nearby bear watching hide makes a perfect evening addition to a ridge day.

Retezat National Park: Remote and Extraordinary

Retezat is Romania's oldest national park — 80 glacial lakes, granite peaks and a wilderness feeling that is increasingly rare in Europe. The approach from Hateg takes 1–2 hours, and from the main trailhead you reach Bucura Lake — the largest glacial lake in Romania — in about 3 hours.

Retezat rewards those who stay 2–3 nights. The path to Papusa peak (2,508m) is demanding but manageable for fit Level 3 walkers. The solitude in the interior is absolute — it is possible to walk for an entire day and see no other people.

For Beginners: Level 1 and Level 2 Options

Not every Romania hiking experience requires serious fitness. The Bicaz gorge is a dramatic limestone canyon accessible with gentle walking shoes. The Apuseni caves and Turda gorge combine cave exploration with easy trail walking. The Transfagarasan road's summit at Balea Lake (accessible by car and cable car) allows walking on high alpine terrain with minimal effort.

Bear watching from a professional hide requires no fitness at all — you sit in a wooden structure at the forest edge for 3–4 hours as dusk falls. A 90% brown bear sighting rate. One of the most memorable wildlife experiences in Europe regardless of hiking ability.
