Romania's Spiritual Landscape

Bucovina — The Painted Monasteries of the East

In the forested hills of northern Moldavia, a series of monasteries were built in the 15th and 16th centuries by Moldavian princes. Their outer walls were covered in extraordinary frescoes — Byzantine art of breathtaking quality, painted in colours that have survived 500 years of weather.

Voronet is known as the Sistine Chapel of the East. The deep cobalt blue it uses is unique in the world — its formula still unknown. Bucovina's monasteries are among the most remarkable artistic achievements in European history, and almost entirely unknown to Western tourists.

Sucevita and Moldovita

Sucevita has the most complete set of exterior frescoes of all the monasteries. Moldovita contains the Siege of Constantinople painted in remarkable detail.

Moldavian Food Culture

Bucovina and neighbouring Moldova have a distinct food culture — richer, heartier and more influenced by neighbouring cultures than southern Romania. Local wines are exceptional.

The Monastery Circuit

A Day Among Five Centuries of Byzantine Art

The main monastery circuit — Voronet, Humor, Moldovita and Sucevita — can be covered in one full day with a knowledgeable guide. But it rewards a slower approach. Two days allows you to visit each in the right light and absorb what you are looking at.

Our guides understand both the history and the art. They explain not just what is depicted but why — the theological programmes, the political messages, the extraordinary technical achievement of painting on wet plaster with colours that would last half a millennium.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How many monasteries should I visit?+
The core four — Voronet, Humor, Sucevita and Moldovita — form the essential circuit. Each has distinct character and each is extraordinary. Allow a full day minimum, ideally two.
What is Voronet Blue?+
The deep cobalt blue used in Voronet's frescoes is unique in the world. The exact formula of the pigment has never been reproduced or fully explained. It has remained vivid for 500 years.
Can I combine Bucovina with other regions?+
Yes — most effectively with Maramures, reached via the dramatic Prislop Pass. Moldova wine country is also nearby. A 9–12 night journey can cover both regions well.
How do I get to Bucovina?+
The best gateways are Suceava (SCV) airport or Iasi (IAS) — both served from Bucharest. Alternatively fly Bucharest OTP and we drive or train to Bucovina. Ask us about the best routing for your dates.
When is the best time to visit?+
May to October for the warmest weather. The frescoes are beautiful in any light. Winter visits — particularly December — have a magical atmosphere but road conditions require care. Our guides know the region in all seasons.
