Romania's Secret Mountain Range

Apuseni — The Mountains That Tourism Forgot

The Apuseni Mountains are the western arm of the Carpathians — lower, gentler and far less visited than the Fagaras or Bucegi. A landscape of deep gorges, spectacular cave systems, traditional villages and a distinct Transylvanian folk culture that has survived intact.

The Apuseni are what the Alps looked like before ski resorts arrived. Meadows grazed by horses and sheep, villages where the architecture has not changed in 200 years, and a cave system — the Scarisoara Ice Cave — that contains one of the world's oldest underground glaciers.

Apuseni Cave Systems

Into the Oldest Ice in the World

The Apuseni contains the densest concentration of caves in Romania — over 3,000 known cave systems. The Scarisoara Ice Cave is the centrepiece: a 105-metre entrance shaft opens into chambers containing an ice block estimated at 3,500 years old, with formations that look like a frozen cathedral.

The Bear Cave at Chiscau contains the bones of 140 cave bears, extinct for 15,000 years, preserved in the calcite floor. The Meziad Cave has a stream flowing through it. Each is a genuinely world-class natural phenomenon.
