The Fagaras Ridge

Romania’s Greatest Hike — 70km Above 2,000m

The Fagaras range is the backbone of the Southern Carpathians and Romania’s highest mountain area. The main ridge runs for 70 kilometres above 2,000 metres, with Moldoveanu at 2,544m the highest point in Romania.

The full ridge traverse takes 5–7 days and is one of the most rewarding multi-day hikes in Europe — comparable to the best Alpine routes but with a tiny fraction of the other walkers. Glacial lakes, ancient forest on the descent, mountain refuges every 3–4 hours.

Piatra Craiului

Romania’s Most Dramatic Ridge Walk

Piatra Craiului (“The King’s Stone”) is a 22-kilometre limestone ridge that rises sharply from the Transylvanian plateau to form one of the most striking mountain skylines in Central Europe.

The main ridge traverse is Level 3–4 — narrow in places, exposed on both sides, with scrambling sections. The lower approaches are accessible at Level 2. The views from the crest, on a clear day, extend from the Fagaras to the Bucegi.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need hiking experience for Romania?+
It depends on the route. Level 1–2 trails require no hiking experience — good walking shoes and a reasonable fitness level are sufficient. Level 3–4 requires genuine hiking experience, proper boots and fitness. We always ask about your experience and recommend accordingly.
What equipment do I need?+
For Level 1–2: comfortable walking shoes, waterproofs, layers. For Level 3–4: proper hiking boots (ankle support), waterproofs, trekking poles, sun protection, 2–3 litre water capacity. We provide a detailed kit list for every specific itinerary.
Is hiking insurance required?+
Travel insurance with hiking cover is required for all Level 3–4 itineraries and strongly recommended for Level 2. Standard travel insurance does not always cover mountain activities — check specifically for trekking at altitude.
When is the best time for hiking in Romania?+
June to September for the main ridge trails. The Fagaras and Transfagarasan are typically closed until mid-June due to snow. July and August have the longest days and most stable weather. September offers golden light and fewer walkers.
