Bucovina — The Painted Monasteries of Romania
500 years of Byzantine frescoes on the walls of the Sistine Chapel of the East
You wake up to the sound of chickens, the smell of fresh bread baking, and mountains stretching to the horizon. The village has not changed in 200 years. This is Romania as it actually is.
Eight UNESCO-listed monasteries in the forested hills of northern Romania. Extraordinary medieval art, Voronet Blue and a spiritual landscape of rare beauty.
Bucovina — The Painted Monasteries of the East
In the forested hills of northern Moldavia, a series of monasteries were built in the 15th and 16th centuries by Moldavian princes. Their outer walls were covered in extraordinary frescoes — Byzantine art of breathtaking quality, painted in colours that have survived 500 years of weather.
Voronet is known as the Sistine Chapel of the East. The deep cobalt blue it uses is unique in the world — its formula still unknown. Bucovina's monasteries are among the most remarkable artistic achievements in European history, and almost entirely unknown to Western tourists.
