Romania in Context

Where It Is, What It Is and Why It Matters

Romania sits in South-Eastern Europe, bordered by Ukraine to the north, Moldova to the east, the Black Sea to the south-east, Bulgaria to the south, Serbia to the south-west and Hungary to the west. It is the second-largest country in Central and Eastern Europe after Poland.

The Carpathian mountains divide the country into three historical regions — Transylvania to the west, Wallachia to the south and Moldova to the east. These were separate principalities for most of their history, uniting as a single Romanian state in 1918. The differences between them are still visible in architecture, cuisine, dialect and character.
